How to Inspect and Retire a Diamond Core Bit After a Jammed Hole

A jammed diamond core bit should not automatically be returned to service. A sudden stoppage can place abnormal mechanical loads on the barrel, segments, welds, threads and drilling equipment. Protec Tools recommends a structured inspection before a core bit is repaired, reconditioned or reused.

The inspection should begin only after the machine has been isolated and the bit has cooled sufficiently for safe handling. The objective is to identify visible or structural damage rather than simply checking whether the bit still rotates.

  2. Clean the core bit and inspect the barrel.

  4. Look for evidence of heat, binding or impact damage.

Preventing Another Jammed Hole

After a jam, buyers should also review drilling parameters, machine alignment, water flow where wet drilling is used, reinforcement conditions and the suitability of the diamond bond. Reusing a damaged bit without correcting the cause can lead to another failure.
