Drilling faucet holes, soap dispenser openings, and cooktop cutouts in thin stone and large-format porcelain creates stress concentrations that crack slabs from the hole edge to the nearest free edge. Standard core bits grab and bind, transmitting torque that fractures brittle materials. Zero-tension core bit designs minimize radial pressure and allow controlled material removal on slabs as thin as 12 mm.
Zero-tension bits use a thinner kerf, finer diamond grit, and a barrel profile that reduces side friction against the hole wall. Some designs incorporate vertical slots that relieve pressure as the bit advances through the material thickness.
Always drill from the finished face when possible — blowout occurs on the exit side. Support the slab fully beneath the drill point with a sacrificial backer board. Run at reduced RPM and maintain continuous water flow through the center feed.
Protec Tools zero-tension core bits are available in standard faucet-hole diameters. Request a sizing chart for your CNC and handheld drill lineup.
