Professional tile and ceramic floor installers carry multiple diamond blades because no single design handles every cut on a jobsite. Straight rips through porcelain, L-cut notches around door jambs, and curve cuts on mosaic sheets each stress the blade differently. Stocking the wrong mix leads to chipping, slow progress, and callbacks from visible edge defects.
Continuous Rim Blades
Continuous rim blades cut with a smooth, uninterrupted diamond edge. They produce the cleanest finish on glazed tile, polished porcelain, and glass mosaics where chip-out on the visible face is unacceptable.
- Best for: straight cuts, miter joints, and any cut where the edge remains exposed.
- Limitation: slower on thick porcelain over 15 mm; can overheat without water.
- Tip: pair with a rail guide for repeatable rip cuts on large-format tile.
Segmented Blades
Segmented blades clear debris through gullets between diamond sections, allowing faster cutting on thick ceramic, backer board, and natural stone trim pieces. The tradeoff is a rougher edge that may need polishing or placement in a hidden location.
Installer Stocking Guide
- Carry a 110 mm or 125 mm continuous rim blade as the primary porcelain blade.
- Keep a segmented blade for backer board, thick pavers, and rough notch cuts.
- Replace blades at the first sign of edge chipping — dull blades cause more damage than new ones.
- Run wet whenever the workspace allows; dry cutting accelerates glazing on continuous rims.
